Making Postcards for Equality

Name: Mia

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019

Date of Fieldwork: October 1, 2018

Name of Organization: Lift Every Vote

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Molly Harris and Bridget Olsen

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

We wrote postcards to voters in Florida who signed the petition to get amendment 4 on the ballot. We wrote them to remind the voters that signing the ballot was only the first step in the process and 60% of Floridians had to vote for the bill for it to pass.

What I learned:

I learned that 1.4 million people are not allowed to vote in Florida. I also learned that sometimes politicians making state lines deliberately break up the county’s to make it harder for certain people to vote.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that people sometimes do one thing to help a cause and then think that there work is done and that they have nothing else that they have to do. People don’t understand that change is a multi-step process. For Example, most people sign petitions and then think that their work is done. They do not think that they have to do anything more. But they actually have to vote for the bill if they want it to pass. And they can always help out with the organization or talk to others around them about it to spread awareness too.
