Name: Tatsuya
Social Justice Group: 2018-2019
Date of Fieldwork: October 1, 2018
Name of Organization: Lift Every Vote
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Bridgette Olsen, Molly Harris
Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action
What I did:
We wrote 247 letters with notes and information to people in Florida to try and get them to vote YES on amendment 4, which is trying to re-enfranchize felons(let them vote) and needs 60% pass.
What I learned:
We learned how to write letters and add postcards. We also learned about Amendment 4 and why it’s important for democracy. We also learned how some states try to limit voting and dilute votes by mixing up voting dates and spreading polls around in order to get what they want. We also learned some good ways to get people to read our notes by putting personal notes and messages on them.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that in order to do a good job and get people to vote, you have to work hard. It took me a long time to write to 4 people and some of them might ignore it. I also learned that even though some people may ignore the letter, some other people may take it to heart and vote your way. So, in the end, it is still worth it.
