Name: Juno
Social Justice Group: 2018-2019
Date of Fieldwork: October 1, 2018
Name of Organization: Lift Every Vote
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Molly Harris, Brigette Olsen
Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action
What I did:
We signed 247 postcards as a group, in order to have Floridians vote in favor of Amendment 4.
What I learned:
Amendment 4 is a vote for felons to be re-enfranchised. Around 1.5 million felons don’t have the right to vote in elections which could effect the turnout of any election. It needs 60% percent of the vote in order to pass, and we sent the postcards to make sure the confusing early voting doesn’t stop people from knowing when and where to work.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Almost everyone has the right to vote, and denying people their rights as a citizen is going against the Constitution. The confusing early voting dates are made to push some voting in a certain direction. So, that’s why we sent the postcards.
