Our group is studying climate change and the effect it has on marine environments and ecosystems. One specific example of this would be how rising ocean temperatures destroys coral reefs which are home to thousands of fish and plankton. When coral takes on abnormal amounts of heat, it becomes stressed, and it removes the algae from itself. This is a problem because the coral feeds off of the algae to survive and when the coral dies, it is no longer a sustainable living space for fish and plankton. Our group wants to find an efficient but affordable way to slow down the rising ocean temperatures and reduce the number of coral reefs that are being destroyed.
