Interview with a DACA Recipient

Name: Zachary Cappadocia

Social Justice Group: DACA and Immigration

Name of Organization: N/A

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: DACA Recipient

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

During this fieldwork we interviewed a DACA recipient. DACA stands for Deferred action for Childhood Arrivals. He told us about his journey coming over the border and the events that occurred after.

What I learned:

This interview was rich with information concerning our topic. The DACA recipients biggest points was his concern applying for DACA, the divide DACA creates and his attitude towards the trump administration.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

One of the big things I took away from this interview is the basic hysteria behind applying for DACA. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. In practice the idea of DACA is a great. It’s not the child’s fault they’re parents brought them over the border. But the one faulty aspect of this program is you have to expose your family. When filling out application form for DACA you list your phone number your address . I can understand the concern especially since the administration were in currently views immigrants as the enemy. I also learned that DACA creates this idea of a good immigrant and a bad immigrant. DACA gives temporary protected status to the “good” immigrants when in reality the “bad” immigrants deserve DACA just as much. The DACA recipient explained how he had friends who he applied with at the same time and some of them were rejected. This made it seem as though he was better then them and this  hurt there friendship. He also explained even though the Trump Administration plans on has plans for the immigrant community he still plans on fighting.

My name is Zach Cappadocia and I'm a part of the Immigration and DACA 2018 social justice group. Immigration in the U.S.A is currently a huge issue in the Trump administration. The government is using immigration laws as gambling pieces and DACA recipients as political pawns. Its time we break the stereotypes and hysteria behind immigrants and fight.
