No Woman No Cry

Name: Grace Burns

Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care

Date of Fieldwork: March 10, 2018

Name of Organization: None

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Christy Turlington

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

I watched the No Woman No Cry movie and was completely inspired. Me and my mom, Christy, sat in silence and watched this hour-long film.

What I learned:

This film follows a young woman in a poor Bangladeshi town who feels disgraced by the idea of giving birth away from home in a hospital. Seeing the awful way she’s treated there, it’s clear why she was hesitant about giving birth at a hospital. In Guatemala, Christy travels with a pregnant doctor; who has to deal with the terrible result of unsafe abortion, which is responsible for 13 percent of maternal deaths worldwide.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned how this is a very important issue that was also brought up in the Nicole Gonzales interview. Hospital distance shouldn’t be a problem for women anywhere and for women to travel far away only to be discriminated against at their hospital is a brutal thought that is hard to believe it true.
