Name: Jemma
Social Justice Group: Menstrual Health
Date of Fieldwork: January 29, 2018
Name of Organization: No organization
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, author and menstrual activist
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
Jennifer Weiss Wolf came to our class and talked about her book and all of the activism she does. Then we went to the library and interviewed her.
What I learned:
I learned a lot about legislation surrounding menstrual health in the city. And how Bill DeBalsio is comfortable talking about this topic so a lot of laws have been passed surrounding menstrual equity. I also learned about how people around the world deal with there periods and different things that happen to women when they are on their periods. Like in Nepal women are sent into tents which is really unsafe because women have died in the tents from poisonous snakes and other causes.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that if you are interested in something you should pursue it. Even if it doesn’t seem like something is your passion at first you never know what is to come. Jennifer Weiss-Wolf never even thought about the topic of menstruation as a social justice issue till it came up on her Facebook feed and she decided to do research which really got her immersed into the topic. So never just look past something that you are even remotely interested in because that could change your life.
