Name: Ben Connolly
Social Justice Group: Race and Education
Date of Fieldwork: January 18, 2018
Name of Organization: NAACP
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Audrey Gual
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We were lucky to go to the NAACP headquarters for an interview with Audrey Gual, director of the education department of the NAACP. The NAACP is an organization that brings light to lots of different activism topics. They have programs to explain to parents how important it is to help schools so that they can support the schools for a better experience for the students. She gave a packet on what Obama has done in the educational department, which was really helpful.
What I learned:
We learned how many way you can take action. Jut by teaching parents how important education is, you can make a difference. The program is called “Lifted”, and Mrs. Gual explained the surprising impact. The NAACP has been around for over 100 year, which is crazy. They’ve developed and are really the center of fixing educational equity. Their style of supporting education is very different from the Achievement Network, which surprised me. I didn’t think there would be so many ways to tackle educational inequity.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that there’s so many ways you can take action in educational equity. At the beginning of this project, I thought that this topic wasn’t big enough to have so many different way to bring awareness and tackle the problem, but I was wrong. There’s so many big organizations that take action in big ways. Lots of celebrities are also big supporters of education. Chance the Rapper donated lots of money to poor schools, and Logic speaks out about education.
