Name: Kate Borows-Lai

Date of Fieldwork: January 20, 2018
Name of Organization: Women’s march
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: N/A
Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action
What I did:
I went to the NYC women’s march with the LREI group. We went to the high school early and saw people making signs and knitting pussy hats. Even though we weren’t moving for most of the time, it was still a really important and fun experience.
What I learned:
While there was no talk of my topic directly, it was really cool to see so many women AND men standing up for women’s rights. It reminded me of our NBA fieldwork on the previous day, when Ms. Sloane told us that the NBA really respected the WNBA athletes and are trying to help them gain publicity.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that many voices coming together really can make a difference. It felt so amazing to stand in a crowd of thousands, holding up our signs and shouting along to the chants people made up. There was a real sense of unity, and I feel like these marches really are making big changes. I can’t wait to go again next year!
