Name: Henry Toll
Social Justice Group: DACA and Immigration
Date of Fieldwork: December 15, 2017
Name of Organization: New York City of Immigration
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sam Soloman (Deputy of policy)
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We met with Sam Soloman who is the deputy of policy at the New York City of Immigration Affairs. He helps people like the mayor by writing bills and advice, because they have so much work they need other people to write their ideas for bills.
What I learned:
We talked about what he did and what he wanted to do for immigration. He was focused on making the lives of undocumented immigrants better. For example many scandals happen where since they aren’t documented they get treated unfairly or are scammed with tiny wages. He talked about how they are here and are women, so should have basic rights and protection from the government.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
He talked about how their are 100 + immigration statics and how massive the rulebook is. He talked about how people think it is so easy to change one little thing to make lives easier, but this is simply not true. They want to do those things, but people are crafty and find a way around the law or this makes it legal to do this.
