Meeting and Interviewing a dreamer

Name: Henry Toll

Social Justice Group: DACA and Immigration

Date of Fieldwork: December 1, 2017

Name of Organization: NA

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Anonymous Dreamer

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We met a Dreamer who is protected by the DACA organization. He is working at a college and is studying to for specific job. We met with him in LREI on Friday the 1 of December. We interviewed him on his life story and his views on American Immigration and undocumented American Immigrants. To protect him, I am not going to say his name or anything specific enough for a person to identify him.

What I learned:

I learned about a different America, one where you are afraid of a government. Our Dreamer was born outside of America in a poor family and was brought to America at a very early age without knowledge of what was going on. He barely remembers his old country and grew up in America. He talked about when DACA was first created and his fear of signing up for it, because he was telling the government that he was a undocumented Immigrant. He told us his beliefs on Immigration and how the government is handling it. For example, he doesn’t like how the government makes good and bad inmigrantes.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that everyone has a different view on social justice. Even though people are on the same side of a issues, views are different within their side. Their are extremes and people that are almost on the other side of the issue. There is not two team, no us and them, it is a spectrum of different teams. Even though we interview people and ask them do you support DACA or not. We could ask do you support Immigration, but what does that means. If they say yes that could mean literally open borders or, yes, I think we should have American Immigration.
