Name: emily familetti
Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care
Date of Fieldwork: November 23, 2017
Name of Organization: Every Mother Counts
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Nan Struss
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We interviewed Nan about doulas and midwives and how that helps women. I bet you are wondering what a Duolo or a Mid Wife is. They are both jobs to help women get their voice through to others and are there for emotional support. The difference is that one is with you through the only thing and the other, Duolos, are there for only the pregnancy. Through the interview, we took notes on what she was saying.
What I learned:
We learned that It’s really hard in the moment you are having birth to ask the doctor for help or to argue your opinion when and having someone to help talk for you or stand up for you is helpful, so you can speak your mind without struggling. This happens because the doctors think they know whats best for the child but in reality its the mother and fathers decision. this makes birth easier and way more enjoyable. We also learned that Unlike doulas, midwives are there for midterm visits and that’s how they are very different.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned the best way to help is to support people because that helps women and whoever you are working with feel empowered. Trying to make a change and do something big like build a whole new hospital should be left to the professionals, and the best thing we can do is support the others
