Interviewing Bob Carey

Name: Ruby Wexler

Social Justice Group: Refugees

Date of Fieldwork: December 8, 2017

Name of Organization: Office of Refugee Resettlement

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Bob Carey, Former CEO of the Office of Refugee Resettlement

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had a face-time interview with the former Director of the Office for Refugee Resettlement, Bob Carey. Bob Carey was the Director of the Office for Refugee Resettlement under the Obama administration. This was an informative interview from someone who actually worked in refugee resettlement.

What I learned:

We used this interview to learn more about the process of becoming a refugee, and how refugee resettlement works in America. We learned that getting refugee status and getting into America can take a really long time, at longest ten years. You have to go through all kinds of vetting. Say you have a criminal record then you may not get in. Also if you are an adult raveling with your family some of your family may be let in while you are not.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Bob Carey now is working with a refugee organization. I learned that even though he has never been a refugee he still wants to help because he believes that this is important.

Rue

Hi! My name is Ruby W. And I care about refugees because it is important that we help people even if they don't directly effect us. This subject is often overlooked. This is important especially now because of our current political climate.
