Name: Dora Bremond
Social Justice Group: The Rights of the Elderly
Date of Fieldwork: December 5, 2017
Name of Organization: (Skype call)
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Yolanda Cambell
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
During this skype call, we talked to a woman named Yolanda, who is a Palliative of Care. She goes to elder’s homes and keeps them company, around 3 times a week. She helped people with dementia and Alzheimer’s and brightens people’s days by simply visiting them and talking to them. We set up interview questions to ask her and she had very interesting answers such as her visiting experiences and what the struggles of facing one of these ilness’s is. It was really interesting to see her point of view. She said that ever since she was a child, she knew she wanted to help out senior citizens.
What I learned:
I learned so many things during this interview from how to help senior citizens, and to making connections with nursing homes. She said that the elders often state something wrong, like they think its a different day, and she said that when that happens, people need to agree with them instead of creating a fight with them because it really doesn’t matter. She made many great points and it showed that not enough people are willing to care, and the people that care really do help, yet there are not enough people.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Through the interview, I learned that there are a lot of steps to take in order to help the senior citizens. Even if its a really small action, and not only for senior citizens, anything helps, the smallest thing like having a conversation with someone or playing a simple game of cards. But of course, this is not reality because there are not enough people stepping up.
