Name: Harvey Van Blerkom
Social Justice Group: Sports and Equality
Date of Fieldwork: November 30, 2017
Name of Organization: Washington Post
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Will Hobson
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We interviewed Pulitzer Prize-winning, Washington Post writer Will Hobson, though he won the Pulitzer Prize at the Tampa Bay Times.
What I learned:
This interview focused on a different aspect of our topic as it mainly focused on the accusations that women on the U.S. gymnastics have made against Larry Nassar. Will Hobson wrote an article on the topic which is how we found him.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Through the fieldwork, I learned that many girls don’t know when they are abused and it takes them years to come out and accuse someone of doing something to them. I learned that no matter what people do to try to prevent abuse you can’t stop someone. This mainly applies when you have organizations that involve adults interacting with kids. If you are a concerned citizen, you would learn about the problem and spread awareness, so that when cases like these happen, they get reported. As I learned in the Chris Mosier Interview, It is hard for anything for kids to do with the topic other than keep themselves in good positions, and to stand up for people if anything wrong happens to them.
