Name: Hudson Kassen
Social Justice Group: Refugees
Date of Fieldwork: November 21, 2017
Name of Organization: UNHCR
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ms. Tina Hinh
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We did a Skype with a woman from the the UNHCR.
What I learned:
I learned that at almost any time there are 50 million people with refugee status. But the UNHCR only helps re-settle about 24 million at any one point in time.
I also learned that the ceiling, or maximum number of refugees that our government allows in one fiscal year, and that it has gone to lower levels than it has in almost two decades.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that social justice isn’t always just about what’s right, its sometimes about the slow process of the law, which can often stand in the way of what needs to be done.
