Name: Emma Diamond
Social Justice Group: Human Trafficking
Date of Fieldwork: November 17, 2017
Name of Organization: Safe Horizon
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Noelle Fries (Manager Of Training And Community Outreach)
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
My group went to Noelle Fries office in Brooklyn and interviewed her about what exactly she does and about Human Trafficking.
What I learned:
I learned that taking legal action against their Pimp/Trafficker is completely up to what the victim of Human Trafficking wants to do. Noelle Fries said that most of the victims that come to Safe Horizon for help, don’t take legal action because they just want to focus on getting better and helping themselves. I also learned that it is hard to tell where Human Trafficking happens the most because it happens all around the world and because a lot of Human Trafficking is never reported.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
During this fieldwork, I learned that spreading awareness about a social justice topic is just as important as taking action. Noelle Fries doesn’t only work with victims of Human Trafficking, but she also trains others about Human Trafficking. These trainings consist of learning the definition of Human Trafficking, how to recognize that it is happening to someone, vulnerabilities/red flags, and an introduction on how to care and help someone who is a victim of Human Trafficking. When Noelle teaches others these things, the people learning can begin to take action on this topic. This shows that spreading awareness causes more and more people to take action on a social justice topic.
