On Wednesday, January 18th my social justice group and I started to watch the movie flow which talked about the world water crisis and how people didn’t have access to clean and safe water. I had found this movie for us to watch when I was talking to my teacher Sarah and I had brought it up with her and it even happened that a mother at our school worked on the movie. I then decided with my teacher that this movie would be perfect for our group. So one day during lunch my group and I started to watch the documentary. The film starts off and talks about the world water crisis and that nearly two million people die each year from water-borne diseases worldwide. The movie talks about privatization of water infrastructure and how major companies like Nestle and even coca-cola company are privatizing the water industry. The movie talks about how big companies like those try to make it seem like bottled water is cleaner and safer than tap water when in fact because there is no primary monitoring agency designated for the bottled water industry it makes it less safe. Basically, your tap water has to go through many different stages and is constantly being monitored by different agencies but bottled water doesn’t have that because it is a private company. This has to do with environmental justice because as the bottled water industry grows people in low-income communities will not have access to that water because of the cost. Water is something that everyone has the right to have access to but as time goes on these large corporations are making water more bottled based which means that people who can’t afford that bottled water now have less access to water. Also, these large companies are making money off of what is a human right. Something that my group realized was that many people have no idea that this is happening. People need to know about this issue so that they are aware and educated to know their rights. This film shows how large companies have so much power over our everyday lives. People may not see it but large companies often run our lives whether we know it or not. This film helped explain the access to clean water part of our project.
