Meeting with Seth Eastman, LREI

Blog Post #6:

Developing Curriculum Activities in-line with our Social Justice Mission

Meeting with Seth Eastman, LREI

February, 2017

Elizabeth and Sarah recommended that we talk to Seth about our project. It was a great idea because Seth shares the same passion for sports and getting kids involved in sports and physical education. He is an after school teacher, a summer camp counselor, and one of our basketball coaches.

We met with him twice and presented our work. He gave us some feedback, including that we should add the differences and similarities of structured and unstructured play. Overall he enjoyed the presentation and he was happy that a group was finally focussing on the topic of sports. He particularly liked the Dicks Sporting Goods video in which random basketball hoops are placed in odd locations throughout the country as an experiment to see if anyone would start to play. People start to play and start bonding with people they did not know, “don’t matter if you’re black, white, or pinstripe, as long as you dribble that basketball, we’ll all get along.”

He also recommended researching what exercise actually does for the brain and emailed me some useful links. He gave me a copy of Brain Rules by Dr. John Medina. This led me to add to our presentation a video clip of Dr. Medina talking about the brain science behind why exercise improves cognition.

I am an 8th grader at LREI. I play a lot of sports, in particular soccer and basketball. For my Social Justice project, I want to study the importance of physical education and sports and how it is being taken away from many kids in this country. This is important because sports are very beneficial for kids and adults throughout their life time.
