Interview with Kaitlyn Parkins (Lower East Side Ecology Center ) 1/19/17

(My group standing with Kaitlyn Parkins)

On the 19th of January we went to the Lower East Side Ecology Center to interview Kaitlyn Parkins. She is an educational director for the Lower East Side Ecology Center. We interviewed her about what she knows about water pollution and how water pollution affects the river and the life that lives in it. We learned that many people think that the only reason that the rivers are polluted is because of sewage but really local fishers also contribute to the pollution. The sewage does play a large part in the pollution of the rivers but fishing line are very deadly to the creatures too. During our visit their we learned that one way that they are trying to stop fishing lines from getting in the ocean if to put special fishing line trashcans. The problem is that fishermen are dumping their lines into the water and this is killing the wildlife. The fishermen are tossing their lines into the water because their is not place that they can dispose of them on land. They want to make these easy and accessible to all fishermen so that they can stop this problem. They plan to put these all over the park and paint them vibrant colors so that the fishermen know they are there. They think that by making them as accessible as possible they can get the fishermen to use them.
