Interview With Drew Barrymore: 1.25.17

My social justice group and I were so lucky and honored to be given the chance to interview Ms. Drew Barrymore. Even though the interview was in a phone call instead of a FaceTime or in person, the call was very informative and overall a really great experience.

We started off the interview with Lily’s question, which asked if Barrymore had wanted to portray women as stronger or smarter in the movie Flower Films that she made with her friend Nancy Juvonen. She responded with saying that in the end of the day, they were girls who wanted to be girls. They didn’t try to portray women in a certain way; they just wanted to portray them in the way that they were.

We then continued on with the other questions, and throughout the entire thing she remained adamant about the fact that in the end of the day, you have to be grateful for what you have. “I don’t expect anything, I want to create it for myself. I don’t believe I’m owed anything.”

When she was asked what she wants her daughters to know about women’s image in the media and what they should be prepared for, she said that “you have to shut out any voices inside your head that make you feel not good about yourself, including your the one inside your head. You can’t fall pray on the bullsh*t that gets thrown in your direction. What is in your heart and head will take you further than anything else.”

Towards the end of the interview, she gave us the most inspiring words that made the interview I had with her one that I will never forget:

“I want my daughters to grow up to become the women that you guys are. Go have a kicka** day.”

Drew Barrymore has been a famous actress since she was young. Her lifetime in the spotlight has had an affect on her, which was why we interviewed her.
