On Tuesday, January 10th, 2017, my group interviewed one of our former humanities teachers, Suzanne Cohen. We asked her about her experience, and what it is like today to be a gay woman. We asked her about what it was like when she came out ot her family and friends. One really good point she made was that she is not done coming out. She will have to constantly come out to people she meets and explain her story. A question we asked her was “have you ever faced discrimination?” To this she said that by just being a part of the LGBTQ community, you are constantly being discriminated against. There are so many people who are not accepting, and are protesting laws like gay marriage. She shad she has also faced personal discrimination. People automatically assume she is straight because that is what society thinks of when they hear the word “marriage”, a man and a woman. In fact, when you do a Google image search of the words “wedding couple”, it takes over 400 images to reach a gay couple. In fact, I got so bored of counting pictures, I didn’t make it past 450. It shows how much society thinks that being straight is the only way. This interview taught us a lot about personal experience rather than the world as a whole. Thank you so much to Suzanne for meeting with us and sharing her story!
