For our fourth fieldwork, we went to see the newly released movie, Hidden Figures. This movie is about African American women who work at NASA as mathematicians and fight for equality for both African Americans and women. Throughout the movie, they stand up to what they think is right and they prove themselves worthy of whatever is put in front of them. Even though the movie is not related to outer beauty standards, it is related to women’s empowerment and standing up for equality. The movie proves that women are just as good if not better than men and that they should not be thought of as inferior. This movie really inspired me to work hard and keep going no matter what. What surprised me is how confident the three main characters were during the whole movie, whenever someone insulted them or told them that they were not as strong, they just came up with a comeback and they didn’t let it affect their work at all. I think that the fact that they were together and fighting with the help of each other empowered them and made them stronger. What is amazing is that this movie is based on a true story, it’s not just fiction, these are real living people who made a difference in the world and being acknowledged for it. For the teach-in, I would like to show them as an example of strong and powerful women. Maybe we could collect information on many different women and make a slideshow to show that if you want, you can be powerful and change the world.
