Rally in Front of Senator Chuck Schemers Office 1/ 9/17

On January 9th, after eating lunch and quickly discussing a plan, Cole, Jack, Willem, Susannah and I bundled up in 3+ layers, opened the doors and flinched at the freezing weather. Our goal was to go to a rally to say no to Donald Trump’s appointments to his cabinet. We arrived at 48th and were a little skeptical as the crowd was not very big. However, we stood behind the fences in front of the huge office building and started shouting chants like “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Rex Tillerson has got to go” or “Show me what democracy looks like, This is what democracy looks like.” At first, this seemed like a quiet plea, but as 45 minutes passed and we looked around, we were one amongst hundreds of other Environmental activists. The cold was too much so we had to take a quick break to a Starbucks to refresh. After that we returned to find the leaders of the protest were not their anymore and everyone seemed to be waiting for information and right before we left someone came down and announced that our protest had been a success and that Chuck Schemer would ask for tax returns as well as other important info that without, he will vote no. One thing I want to take away from this is how they had everyone sign a form that said that they wanted a new cabinet, I think it would be cool to get our teach in group to sign a form like this and send it to either a senator or the white house. One skill I think I picked up from this fieldwork was protesting because this was the first protest I have ever been to. I really think it is a skill to be able to plant your feet on the ground (even if it’s only 20 degrees) and say no, I will not stand for this.
