On Monday, November 21, we met with David Ludwig. He is the director of Community Programs at Asphalt Green at the uptown location. Asphalt Green is a sports facility where they have sports classes. In addition to teaching classes, they also help children and senior citizens in need. We interviewed him about his role at Asphalt Green, and how we can help the problem. He told us that we have an opportunity to go to a public school downtown and help kids get the exercise they need during their recess time. We will be going on Thursday, January 26 to go the Jacob August Riis school. The kids that we will be focusing on are little kids. He also explained how it is the law in New York State for kids to have at least 120 hours of Physical Education per week, and most public school kids only get around 60 hours per week. They cut the hours so much because sometimes they either think that gym isn’t important, or they don’t have enough money for it. Asphalt Green sends a coach once a week to schools around the city because since the schools don’t get much time to run around. This is very important for kids because they can’t focus as well in school unless they have time to run around. They need to be able to use their time wisely and run around as much as possible during the little time they have during recess. We will definitely visit one of these schools and help these kids in need. When we asked him how he felt about helping kids, he got a little bit emotional and started talking about how when he sees the look on those kids faces when they are having fun, he knows he’s the reason they are smiling and are healthy.
