Volunteering with the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children on 12/11/16: RKM

On this visit, we were invited to volunteer by Inessa Spencer, and Beverly Orth-Geoghegan. Our job was to assemble arts and crafts toys for kids who have been abused. We along with 4 other volunteers, and 5 other staff members cut out hundreds of paper flowers for the children to make boquets out of. The people there were really nice, and they spoke to us casually. A clinician is  a doctor that has direct contact with and responsibility for patients. The clinician’s we met said that each of the clinicians got to really get to know their patient and that the therapies they received depended on the kind of child they were. They offered play therapy, dance therapy, art therapy talk therapy, and so much more. I loved that this facility had so many methods of therapy, because each child is different and they can’t all be expected to be able to get better using one technique. This organization also  has a very rich history. The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was the first child abuse prevention agency in the world. Beverly told me this and I just couldn’t believe it! It’s so cool to me that I got to volunteer at the first one! It was a very relaxed environment. We were offered Cheez-its and cookies as we prepared the crafts. The whole team was really excited that we chose to volunteer because they usually only get adults. They were also very impressed that we found their organization by just cold calling. I want the kids that leave our teach-in to feel the way we did leaving this fieldwork: Hopeful, and empowered.

My name is Rachel, and I'm an eighth grader at LREI. My social justice group is focusing on the issue of child abuse. 1 in 5 children will be abused before the age of 18. We want to shed light on this topic and help prevent this from happening. No child deserves this.
