Interview With Patricia McCormick

For our second fieldwork, we met with the author Patricia McCormick at Starbucks for coffee and the interview. She wrote the book, Sold in 2006, which ended up becoming a movie. During our visit with Patricia, we learned a lot about what goes on in Nepal and India with sex trafficking. There are many cases of sexual trafficking in places called “happy houses.” Happy houses are places where pimps sell women. She gave us a true example of something that made her especially sad. A little boy would draw pictures of his mother as a queen. And when Patricia asked why he drew her as a queen he said, “because he remembers when he was little and had a little time to play and spend time together but now she’s with so many men she doesn’t have time with him.” I discovered that Patricia really wanted young adults like us to be aware of the situation. Which is why she wrote her book and wanted every little detail to be in it that she witnessed in Nepal. Speaking to her, I really felt connected and very proud that my group is also trying to spread awareness. Patricia also was talking to us about how nobody is really doing anything about it and I agree. Patricia told us about an organization called Dignity Backpacks that had drives like, “journals, clothes and diaries” that people would bring in for victims of sex trafficking.
