On December 9th, my group and I went over to the Center For Reproductive Rights and interviewed three women. We interviewed Devon Hutchins, along with her two coworkers. Their names were Lauren and Genevieve. The Center For Reproductive Rights is an organization that focuses on using the law to help make the government protect, respect and fulfill women’s reproductive rights and freedom.

My group and I learned a lot more about women’s reproductive rights issues that are currently going on in our world. In the beginning, my group and I knew that Texas was burying aborted fetuses, but when we went to the Center For Reproductive Rights, they expanded our knowledge about that issue. We asked Devon, Genevieve, and Lauren how they felt about the law and they explained to us how it made them frustrated because it doesn’t help women’s reproductive rights. It actually shames women because aborting a fetus is a very hard thing to do, but forcing her to bury it could make her feel even more upset. They told us that right now, fetuses are disposed of in a clean and healthy way. Therefore, forcing women to bury their aborted fetuses should not be a mandatory law.

Also, we learned a lot about other ways women are shamed for aborting their fetuses. Many people actually use lies to pass certain laws and more. So many of them are against abortion that they use lies to shame women and end their reproductive freedom. Some of the lies that people say are that you can get breast cancer by getting an abortion, they say it causes depression and more. These lies are called junk science because it is fake scientific information. When people hear this information, they automatically say that abortion is bad and that they don’t want anything like it to happen, but they don’t know that it is a lie. Women are losing their reproductive freedom because of a simple tiny law. My group and I found that to be extremely upsetting because women are losing a lot because one lie that someone just made up. Women could be dying and so much more because of it and people don’t realize that.

After I realized how women are shamed for having an abortion, I realized that I want to look into more ways they are shamed. I want to do this because I believe that it is not fair to shame a woman based on what she believes is right for her own body. I want to show people that women are being shamed and that it should not be allowed. I will definitely look into this issue and possibly help stop it.

My group and I were so grateful that we had the chance to speak with the Center For Reproductive Rights. It was a great opportunity that taught us a lot about our topic. I think that my group and I will definitely use information about the new Texas law and lies about abortion for our social justice presentation because it is very important for people to know the truth about these laws. We want to inform others and let them know that these laws aren’t helping women. Instead, it is shaming them. We loved talking to Lauren, Genevieve, and Devon and we are so thankful that we had the chance to talk to such amazing people.
