For our second fieldwork, my group went back to Governors Island to partner up with the Billion Oyster Project again. We went with the other water pollution group as well. On their blogs, they probably will have a lot more things that we learned but since we already went and learned a lot, we didn’t learn as much. We did learn a little more about the school the organizations partners up with, the NY Harbor School. We learned how they help out in a part of their education, we learned how they still learn all of the high school academics and they can get their own boating license! We explored the Billion Oyster Project Facility a little more seeing where they kept other Hudson river marine life. They put them in bottles, tanks or barrels depending on the species and the organization studies them so they can help the Hudson River more effectively. We took a small tour around the island and then went on a dock and pulled up oysters, counted oysters, and put other marine life that was caught either back in the river or in buckets for research. We counted around three or four hundred oysters altogether. In between, we had lunch and relaxed a bit while the director of the Billion Oyster Project talked to use and asked us about our social justice project. We told him how we are partnering with several organizations to raise awareness towards the problem of water pollution. It was a fun experience but mostly a refresher, our next fieldwork will be with a different organization and we will hopefully learn some new information.
