Fieldwork with Pro Choice America (Interview With Anne Bailey) 12/9/16

A few days ago my group had a phone interview with a woman named Anne Bailey. Anne works for Pro Choice America. Pro Choice America uses politics to help elect candidates who believe in pro choice and eliminate candidates who don’t. Anne brought up some very smart points, especially about the election. Anne said that she thought that the Presidential Election was very scary. She thinks that America is a scary and unsafe place for women with Trump in power. Anne said that although Trump gets to appoint a new justice, it will restore order in the court. She explained that the court used to be mostly liberal, and with Trump appointing an anti-choice person, the court will be back to 4 liberals, 4 conservatives, and 1 mixed. Anne thinks that as long as one of the older justices doesn’t die, women still have a chance for their rights.

Another thing that Anne brought up was her opinion on the Texas law stating how all aborted fetuses must be buried. She thinks that this law is horrible and inhumane because this law is pretty much just shaming women. Some women get pregnant that never wanted to be pregnant. She thinks that they shouldn’t have to bury their fetus if they don’t want to. Anne says that women have the choice to do what they want. She thinks that if a women wants to bury her fetus, if it was a miscarriage or for other personal reasons, than she should have the right to. But Anne does not believe that it should be set in stone that all women have to bury their fetuses. Some women are in terrible situations and have horrible pregnancies, and maybe they don’t want to have what could have been their child buried.

I think that this really impacted me. I completely agree with Anne. I don’t think that women should be forced to bury their fetuses either. I also think that Anne phrased her opinions in a very smart way. She opened up new ideas and gave us more information to research. Now that I’ve spoken with Anne, I want to research other unfair fetal disposal laws. I think that it might be interesting to add into our Teach-In.

Overall, our phone call with Anne was really great and educational, and I hope one day we can speak to her again.
