Thursday November 10th, we went to a play at the high school called “The Laramie Project”. It’s about a boy named Matthew Shepard who was brutally murdered by two men because he was gay. The play written by Moises Kaufman and it was made up from interviews made by Moises and his team. They went to Laramie, Wyoming after the murder of Matthew to gather interviews of the people that lived there, met Matthew, or knew him. There were a lot of monologues by the characters, and almost every actor played more than one character. Someone even played Moises Kaufman. I was really emotional throughout the play because of all the sad scenes and emotions that the actors were portraying in “The Laramie Project.” The play made me wonder and think that there are a lot of anti-gay crimes out there, why isn’t there more awareness in in the world about those? This play is not only for Matthew Shepard, but it shows how unfair it is for the world to discriminate against people just because they’re gay. People should be able to be who they are, and not hide themselves because there are people out there who don’t understand them, and won’t take the time to. For the Teach-In, I want to show the middle school that you can be who you are no matter what. By giving them support, and showing them how other people, can be themselves because of their environment, and the people around them. Also that Matthew Shepard was really brave, and those men who murdered him were terrible and just didn’t understand who he was, and didn’t even want to.
