Miss Representation was a very powerful movie about how women are perceived in the media. It was a very good first fieldwork as it gave us an even better idea as to what we were doing and what we needed to change.

My group’s first field work was watching a movie called Miss Representation. The film was about all the types of ways women are misrepresented in the media in this day and age. When women become big figures in politics, a lot of times they tend to focus on how she presents herself – not as in her demeanor, but in her outfits and the amount of makeup she’s wearing. Also, a lot news channels put stuff that aren’t news as breaking news. For example, one news channel forced a female newscaster to talk about what Kate Hudson was wearing the previous night as one of the news headlines – and the woman refused, right on national television.

Another thing the film taught us is that on order for men to be taking women seriously, we need to start taking ourselves seriously. Women need to stop criticizing other women on what they wear and how they look. We can’t expect men to stop criticizing us when that’s all we do. It’s hypocritical and it adds to the false image that women are crazy.
