Our group went to the Urban Communities climate Resilience Conference. The conference was located uptown near Columbia. When we arrived, we were greeted by David Chang, the Environmental Health Coordinator. We helped hand out information pamphlets about different ways you can stay healthy and use non-toxic products to the guests coming in. I learned that the asthma rate in Harlem is very high for two reasons. One reason is because of the fumes from the buses that idle there. The other reason is the heat of the houses is very high because of the busses. This leads to leads to asthma. We heard survivors of Hurricane Sandy tell their stories of how badly treated they were because of the place they live. There was one story about how this person was stuck on a roof and no one came to help her because she was in a poor neighborhood. She also said this was the coldest she has ever felt. These stories made me realize that our government does not care about everyone equally.
