My group and I had a very interesting phone call with Keli Goff. Kelly is an American journalist, playwright and screenwriter. She writes and interviews a lot of people who are dealing with/have to do with women’s reproductive rights. Keli said a lot of very interesting things to us. She explained how she thinks that social media is really un-educating and that it is making people “dumber.” She says that people just read ‘twitter headlines’ instead of actually reading real articles. I feel like this is really true. Personally, I think that I do too sometimes. Instead of being informed and educated on something, kids tend to learn the main idea and have a vague understanding of what’s happening.
Although Keli didn’t tell us what her standpoint on women’s choice is, she did say something very fascinating. Keli said that most people stereotype pro choice people as heartless and pro life people as lifeless. She says that she thinks that both stereotypes are untrue and unfair. Keli also thinks that it is important for youth to know about reproduction rights. She says that the more informed kids are, the less accidental pregnancies will happen. I want to research what other reproductive rights experts think too. Kelli may be right about the decrease in accidental pregnancies, but I want to hear what other people think. Maybe I can include these different views in my teach-in.
Overall, I think that Keli is a really smart woman and that she knew what she was talking about. She seemed to have a lot of experience in the reproductive rights field. Keli made a lot of good points that helped us a lot, and I’m really glad we had the opportunity to talk with her.
