On Thursday, November 10th, our LGBTQ Social Justice group took a trip to see The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman. It was performed by LREI’s high school students. The play is about a young man in college named Matthew Shepard living in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. Matthew was brutally beaten by two men. They beat him because he was gay. Matthew died due to his injuries. The play is filled with interviews of the people living in the town and their knowledge about Matthew and the incident. I thought that the play and everyone’s acting was amazing. I loved how all of the props and costumes were laid out for everyone to see. My group and I learned a lot about Matthew’s story and the Matthew Shepard Foundation. We learned about discrimination against people of the LGBTQ community and how this story is one of many where people were killed because of who they love. I look forward to seeing another performance of the Laramie Project someday.
