The main problem we wanted to resolve and gain a larger understanding around was freedom of speech in foreign countries. Since we are currently living in a nation that prioritizes our first amendment rights, and makes it a paramount objective to protect them, we believed that solving freedom of speech issues in our country would not have the impact we intended. I chose this problem because I found through freedom of speech, we can form unities with people who share similar opinions. Without freedom of speech, these unities are left uncreated. I wanted to help in any way I could, to bring the connection that freedom of speech grants to as many countries as possible. We discovered that most of the people effected by the lack of free speech are just normal citizens. These people are trapped, for multitudes of reasons, in countries that are plagued with governments who revoke freedom of speech. In order to help, we needed to first become knowledgeable about free speech in our community, in order to know how it might function in others. We met with reporters and jurnalists, such as Timothy Karr, a journalist who was stated in Vietnam and had to under go harsh refinement when writing his articles. We also met with organization leaders and first amendment lawyers, like Floyd Abrahms, who worked tirelessly on the infamous Pentagon Papers. After we believed we received adequate knowledge on our issue, we were able to formulate some ideas about its cause. We came to the conclusion that the primary reasons are power hungry governments. These governments fear criticism, and the unifty of their people, these being the primary incentives for the removal of speech in their country. Unfortunately, their isn’t very much we can do to impact the ideologies of our world leaders, many are stubborn and refuse change. Only will free speech become ebiquidous when the powerful are ready to relinquish control.
