The main problem we wanted to understand and address was how the media affects young girl, their mindset, and body image. We are all young women and we didn’t feel empowered by the images and messages that the media was showing us. As we talked to different people and learned more about the topic we discovered that boys as well as girls are affected by this. These negative messages are affecting girls’ futures. Often they forget about their goals and they have a set idea of what an ideal women should be. Boys also have a set idea making them less likely to accept their fellow female peers as a powerful person. We felt like we need to talk to women who deal with advertising and what they try to do to empower girls and send them positive messages. We wanted young girls to make videos that talking about the negativity in the media, stand up and feel powerful. Then we wanted to sent these videos to a center for media and hopefully get them published. The underlying problem is the set standard people in the media have on women, meaning women should be weak and “like a girl” phrase is an insult. The idea of sex sells has a big impact on our project.
