Today we went down near the South Ferry to go to the ACLU/NYCLU. There we had an interview with Sam Thypin-Bermeo. He first showed us the amazing view at his office and then we all sat down at the table. The interview started out awkward and silent since we didn’t now Mr. Bermeo and we weren’t prepared. However, the interview got greater and greater as it went on. Once the awkward silence was over, he started telling us about his opinions and experiences with the police. He told us that when he was younger there was a party full of white teens doing illegal stuff and another party full of black kids doing the exact same stuff. When someone called the cops and both parties there were different outcomes for each party; While all the kids at the white party were nicely driven to their homes, the black kids had to do community service. After the interview, Mr. Bermeo took us around the office and introduced us to some of his co-workers. He also showed us photographs of some of the other issues the NYCLU faced.
