My group went with Mark to a gallery/workshop at the School of Visual Arts. At the entrance of the building there was a gallery that contained different interactive elements that portrayed the Harlem community. There were recordings of the sounds of different neighborhoods and statistics such as diabetes and the number of supermarkets in the Upper East Side vs. East Harlem. I learned a lot from this gallery and I thought it was an amazing way to portray it in such an interactive way. I also loved all of the different maps they had. They had maps showing green space, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, etc. and these were all compared to Harlem. I thought it was really interesting to see this information and learn how this effected the health of a community. After we looked at the gallery, we split into groups and talked about what we saw from different prompts. Ryann, Reggi, Pierre and I had to split up. I was in a group with four other adults who worked at clinics, organizations, etc. and we analyzed the gallery and talked about how this helps identify the problems in this area and how we can help. I thought that this fieldwork was very helpful and educational. It helped us a lot and we even decided to base our workshop off of the mapping that we saw at the workshop. I think this helped with our skills talking to people because we had to talk to adults we had never met before about the gallery. It was kind of intimidating at times since they were experts in this field and had lots of deep opinions on the topic. Overall, I thought this fieldwork was extremely helpful to us and ultimately lead us to where we want to be at the end of the project.
