For our fourth fieldwork, my group visited Marina Maher Communications. It is a company that works in advertising and marketing to women. While we were there, we got to tour the office and take a look at some of the things they do there. Then, we got to ask questions to a bunch of people all working on different things within the company. One of the people we got to talk to was Marina Maher, herself. She is the CEO and founder of the MMC company. We got to sit in on a meeting where we were able to ask a few questions and have a conversation about our topic. One of the questions we asked was, what makes women want to buy things that they advertise, what are some of the factors in marketing to women. Their answer to that question was that when young women see their favorite actress or singer, for example, on an advertisement for mascara with Jennifer Lopez, young girls may see it and want to go buy that kind of mascara. The role models or older girls that younger girls look up to, can advertise different products and get people to buy them easily. They also said that one of the key factors is choosing to advertise something based on something relevant to everyday life. For example, there was a campaign for makeup. They took the makeup and advertised it as makeup from the new Star Wars movie that is so popular right now. They gave a couple other examples of making the advertisements relate to things that are popular today. Another example for that was the Hunger Games movie that had just come out in theaters. They did the same thing as for the Star Wars one. So, people who had seen the movie and liked it, might want to purchase the product because the theme was the movie. I think that this fieldwork visit was really helpful because we got to hear from the other side of the advertisements and marketing to women. The other things we have done so far have not allowed us to see what is like to be actually working with the media in marketing to women, just looking from the outside, in.
