Parents Meeting

School around the 5 boroughs are getting parts of their education taken away in different ways. Some parents send their kids to a school that has a homework help program to find out when they get there that that program has been discontinued due to shortage of funding. Robotics teams and computer classes have been discontinued, school fill up and need more space but are unable to get all because the government isn’t giving them the money they deserve. Schools all around the 5 boroughs are owed tons of money from the government. Brooklyn Tech is owed $14540025.24. You can find out how much money schools you know are owed by going to http://www.howmuchnysrobbed.nyc/

Their idea is that the rich should be taxed 1% more. This will give the government 2.3 billion dollars extra a year which could go a long way if given to public education. This wont even come close to repaying the public schools the money they are already owed but it will still help. Even if it just helps fund an after school homework program at one school and a robotics program at another, it’s still starts to helping kids receive the education they deserve.

Hedge funders are considered ” the champions of inequality” by using their money and instead of helping, negatively effecting the Public School system. By hiding billions of their dollars over seas to avoid taxing, the Public Schools are not getting as much tax money as they deserve. On top of this, they help fund Charter Schools leaving Public Schools in the dust. Governor Cuomo is not helping the matters at all while Bill De Blasio is fighting for more funding. We can help by advocating to your Legislature and encouraging others to do the same. If you don’t know your Legislature that is something you should figure out. The Legislator for the district our school is in (the 66th Assembly District) is Deborah Glick.

My name is Anna Faulkner. I am an eighth grader at LREI. I am focusing on education inequality. I chose this topic because I realize we have such amazing opportunities and we must share out opportunities with those who do not have access to good education.
