Jump Start is an organization that goes into preschools and assists in the class room. Collage students are the only ones who actually go into the class rooms so part of the point of this meeting was so that the people who run the company knew more about what actually went on in the class room. They talked about some of their favorite experiences with the kids and how they work with the kids in general. When they go into a class room they have different activities that go on at the same time. There would be different areas for reading, writing, dramatic play and other activities to engage the children. One of the collage students spoke of an experience where a kid who couldn’t write his name was too scared to go to the writing table but after her talking to the kid a lot, she figured out why he was nervous and helped him through it. She made it her goal to teach that kid to write his name. She spoke of what a proud moment it was for her when she saw that kid write his name for the first time. I think it is important that they focus on preschool because by three years old there is a 30 million word gap between kids with a strong preschool education and kids with a more lacking education. It is important that we help stop education inequalities from a young age. It is unfair to ask a child to catch up with their lack of education at an older age when they are already so far behind. We don’t realize how many word kids really can say and we have to help the say those words. I didn’t even realize that I could say 30 million words. If kids don’t learn these words at this time it is very hard for them to catch up.
