On November 11, my group and I were scheduled to meet with Donna Dees, the founder of Million Mom March, a gun violence prevention organization that was founded in 2000 after the Granada Hills shooting. Dees and her team rallied for a march on Washington DC against gun violence. We met at 10:00 am at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, where we were ready with our questions. Ms. Dees, a very profound speaker, talked about her background before the Million Mom March, stating that “In August of 1999, I was a publicist for the Late Show with David Letterman. I really didn’t care about this issue,” (Donna Dees Interview). She then stated that after the shooting, she watched Nightline on ABC, which had a Vancouver police chief and a Seattle police chief. Their gun violence prevention laws were very different by country. She then talked about how she organized all of the mothers, stating that she took 9 months to organize all of the mothers. She talked about her background from coming from New Orleans. We talked more about the laws that were passed, and what we could do to help. Overall, we could have gone on for a much longer time, but we had to get back to school. It was a very successful interview, overall.
