Along with the Police Brutality group we went to see the Black Panthers movie. We saw it at the BAM theater in Brooklyn. Before going to the movie we didn’t know much about the Black Panthers. We knew them as an activist group that was known for violence. What I came to realize is that the Panthers are given a bad name. We found out in the beginning of the movie that the panthers actually started by patrolling the streets with guns making sure the police didn’t abuse black people. They also started a movement called “Black Is Beautiful” that encouraged black people do be proud of themselves and who they are. They also served free breakfast to children before school. They started that after reading that kids with a good breakfast did better in school. After finishing this movie I threw away the idea that the Panthers were terrorists and realized they were just a supportive group trying to improve America.
