Poor Kids PBS Video

For my group’s first field work we watched a documentary on poor kids in the United States. As this being our first field work it was more for us to gain a better sense of our topic without just jumping into it. I personally felt this was important because poverty is the living condition/state someone is living in, as well a personal topic and matter and it is not okay to start asking questions without understanding where these people are coming from. In addition to this, I learned that people living in poverty, especially kids are not the common depiction that comes to one’s mind, which is a picture of a starving kid in Africa. It is a much more subtle and common. They are regular people like you and me but, they live in poverty. Many kids who live in this condition do little things like collecting cans to help their parents. In the video a family had to get rid of their dog because they weren’t able to support it any more and didn’t want the dog to suffer because of their disposition. Also a mother in poverty had her tubes tied so that she couldn’t get pregnant so that her child didn’t have to suffer through poverty like her other kids. Along with giving me a better idea of what poverty means to people in the united States, it taught me that these people are everyday people like you and me. Going from house to house and losing things to the bank or storage units is a common happening to these people and it isn’t fair. Our communities in the US have one of the highest percent of people living in poverty as well. Over all this was a very informative field work and has well prepared me for my next.

My name is Ryann and I am an eighth grader at LREI: Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School . My social justice project topic is children in poverty and the health issues they my acquire or have. I am interested in this topic because I both want to make a change in NYC's children in poverty and want to first hand volunteer and help.
