During lunch and recess, Dakota, Jaquie, skyler and I watched a film called Missrepresentation. It was created by a woman who had been anorexic as a teen, and went on to become an actress in Hollywood. The documentary wove in a narration of her life story mixed with clips of films and news. I thought the documentary was really compelling because they interviewed many important women on the issues that they face in an industry that is largely dominated by men. The movie talked about how much pressure is put on women to have these perfect bodies- big boobs, tiny waist, big butt, and long legs. In reality, no one can live up to that image, but the media criticizes any one who doesn’t. The creator was really interested on how women in politics are treated by their male counterparts. People constantly criticize them, saying that their clothing is too revealing, or not revealing enough, or that they’re wearing too little or too much makeup. They refer to them as Mrs. or miss instead of their political title, and say things like “she’s such a bitch,” or “she’s a slut.” This is why there aren’t as many women in politics, because they get criticized for everything they do. The movie really went deeply into this topic, and I think it would be great if everyone was required to watch this movie, both boys and girls, because the issues it brought up were very current.
