My group and I took some lunch periods to watch a movie called “Miss Representation.” This movie is kind of like a documentary. In it, many women that we see on the news and weather forecasts and on regular television spoke in the movie about how women are portrayed in the media. I really learned a lot in this film that I didn’t know before. They talked about how women are seen as objects/sexual objects in movies. They are either the needy woman whose life depends on a mans love, the catty and sassy woman, or the cool superhero that wears revealing clothes. These women are either made to tell young girls that their world revolves around men and they should fight anyone who gets in their way, or there is a sexy superhero woman who is made for the male viewers. All of these women are stereotyped and send a message that this is how women act/how they should act. It tells young girls that if they aren’t this, then they aren’t normal. It tells young guys and men that this is what a normal woman looks like. It sets a high standard for women who want to achieve the un-obtainable body that they see all over the media. In magazines, TV shows, movies, and on the internet. It also gives some facts and percentages about how many women are insecure with their bodies. This shows that if a woman is the main character it’s usually because she looks good. Women are always portrayed as objects, not strong powerful beings. This was a very informational film that everyone should watch.
