Our group was lucky to meet with Ronald Kuby, an American criminal defense and civil rights lawyer. Ronald Kuby is a very reputable lawyer and he also is a radio talk show host. We traveled to his law office and we were able to have an interview with him to learn about how he started his law career and to learn about his views on society, police brutality, and racial profiling. Kuby completed his degree in cultural anthropology at the University of Kansas and he became a free-speech and anti-apartheid activist. Kuby became especially concerned with police brutality when he was a victim of it himself. During an anti-apartheid protest, Kuby’s arm was broken by university officers that were attempting to disperse the protest. This led Kuby to where he is today, representing victims of police brutality and criminals who have been mistreated. Meeting with Ronald Kuby provided us a chance to hear a first-hand story from a victim of police brutality. This was important because it gave us a chance to understand the feelings of someone in a situation of police brutality. Kuby was also instrumental in teaching us a little about the legal side of fighting police brutality and racial profiling. This was a great and unique fieldwork for my group and I.
