When we first got to the building where Empowered by You work, we were
surprised about the fact that the floor was shared by many small
companies that were just starting out. Everyone was very busy and
seemed to be intrigued at why a group of 8th grade girls were doing at
their workspace. When Charlotte, the girl we were going to meet saw
us, she seemed very excited that the company she worked for had been
notice by a group of girls who were trying to solve the problem of
poverty. Something that we had in common. Charlotte was carrying a box
of things that were going to help us understand the topic and
understand how they were helping women around the world.
We talked about the concept of micro-finance and how it was helping
women start their own businesses and make a living so that they could
support their families by themselves. Their product is sold at stores
that help the cause, 20% of what they make goes to the women that they
are helping. The company doesn’t only help out women in America, but
all over the world. I could tell that Charlotte felt very passionate
about the topic. She helped us understand the concept of what the
company was doing and why it was so important.
Charlotte also talked about how she had come to be so interested in
the topic and how she had gotten into business. She explained how she
had been introduced into what is micro-finance and why she wanted to
get involved in the company and the work they do. She felt very
passionate and she was very grateful to be able to work with the
company. I felt like the company was making a difference. No matter
how small the difference was, it was an actual difference to strive
for a better world.
