On September 15th, my Social Justice group went to the IFC Theater to see the movie “On Beauty.” Before the film we met with a woman named Stephanie and she had emailed us and asked us to help her with some prior to the movie. We got to the movie and she told us what she needed us to do. My group member Jane and I got a white board and we asked people to write down something they liked/loved about themselves. Whenever we asked someone to writes something down they had to think for a long time and had a really hard time of thinking of something. I thought that was very interesting because it really shows that some people may be happy with themselves but feel self centered or weird thinking about something that they like about their own body. We met the photographer that they followed around named Rick Guidotti. Rick was a former fashion photographer. He said that he saw one of his photos in a magazine and he didn’t even recognize it being his work because it had been retouched so much. He decided that he wanted to go out and take photos of real people that didn’t want to be retouched. He mainly took photos of people that may have a mental disease that accepts their appearance and he went to africa and photographed people that were affected by albinism. The film was very moving and it was very interesting to watch and it was so interesting to see everyones beauty being shown and showing how beautiful everyone is even if they don’t have the “typical” look.
